Sunday, February 26 - Roxy is still improving!

Roxy is still improving and she is returning to her old self. Licking her lips again after her meals, greeting me at the door, looking for other dogs on our walks,  sleeping in her bed next to mine. Our next appointment is on Friday March 2. I will post again with an update then. She is still on the prednisone, 15 mg one time daily. Dr. Lyons says that he continues the dogs on prednisone for a month following the surgery.

Hi Anne! Roxy is a gorgeous girl! Max has a Rottie mixed sister so we have a very special affinity for pretty girls like Roxy! Would it be ok to post a link to your blog from Max's Cyberknife blog?! I'd love to give our readers even more information!

My Cyberknife quote was 13K yesterday. Looking at stereotactic radiation therapy offered at Colorado State. I would be curious to know how they differ. - Pat

Pat, We know someone who had their dog do Stereostatic radiation in FL about a month and a half ago. I can put you in touch with them if you want through Max's blog http://maxck.blogspot.com . Are you dealing with more than 2 tumors? Max had 2 that needed to be zapped through CK and his estimate was just under 12K. We have pet insurance and they covered most of it fortunately. It's been 6 months since Max had his CK and I'm truly amazed at the difference! He couldn't even lift his head 6 months ago and he's running, chasing joggers, bikers, and puppy wrestling and he's 19 yrs old. The first month was an immediate improvement, then he was lethargic for a couple of months after that - we were expecting that as with all radiation, and for the last 3 months he's been consistently great! Just like a normal dog. He goes for walks - 1-3 miles no problem. He's a little slower than he used to be but he's 19 and lost his peripheral vision on his right eye when I accidentally dropped him on his face the night before we went in for his CK - and I feel horrible about - but not bad for someone operating with 1.5 eyes.. I would absolutely do it again if I was ever in the same situation. I was anti radiation prior to this too...

Hi Pat,
From what I understand the Stereostatic Radiation is 17 sessions of radiation, where the cyberknife is 1-4 intense sessions. Roxy only had one. Please look at the blog below and look at the clinical trials that are offered. The one in Minnesota looks especially promising, as it attempts to get rid of the tumor rather than just shrink it. Roxy's tumor was not in the ideal place to operate on, otherwise we would have taken the trip to Minnesota. I wasn't comfortable putting my pup under for 17 days in a row (with weekends off). Good Luck! Whatever you do, I am sure it is the right decision.
